How to choose a tattoo font

Readable script beats decorative script

Names and phrases have to be read by other people. Compare a flowing script with a simpler casual one at the size you plan — the simpler one usually wins below a few centimetres.

Loops and joins need space

Small loops in letters like e, l and o are the first to fill in as a tattoo settles. Larger sizes and slightly wider spacing keep them open longer, though no font can guarantee how lines age.

Style carries meaning

The same words read differently in a flowing script, a fraktur blackletter or a typewriter face. Pick the style for the feeling you want first, then compare two or three fonts inside it on your skin tone.

Check spelling, then let the artist redraw

Spelling, dates and translations are permanent — check them with someone who knows. Bring the PNG as a reference: a tattoo artist will usually redraw the lettering by hand to fit the body's curve and their own line work.
